Today I decided to meet up with a "hike for tykes" group, at Redwood Park in the Oakland Hills. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the meeting area, but the three of us decided to go on a little adventure of our own. Scarlett looked at the trees, took a nap, and nursed among a nature. Max looked for sticks, poked at mushrooms, and pretended he was a dragon under the giant trees.

"We have a crawler baby"

Or at least that's what Max exclaimed when Perry came home from work. Scarlett has been getting around pretty well the past month (although quite slowly), by crawling two paces, pushing up into sitting, scooting on her bottom, and repeating. Finally this weekend she seems to have mastered the traditional crawl. We have a crawler baby!

Last toothless smile

Bottom 2 teeth cut today at 7 1/2 months. Can't see them easily quite yet, but toothless smiles will be replaced with toothy grins in the near future.

Max feeds Scarlett

I decided to let Max feed his little sister her first meal of rice cereal. He seemed pretty delighted to feed her, and she seemed happy to finally get some food.

Trouble

This was Max's response to being told he could not have a Popsicle at 9am. When asked why he was dragging a chair into the kitchen he told me he was just going to "hang out" and then asked me to leave.

New House

It's been about 2 weeks since we've moved in to our new house. We still have boxes and boxes to unpack, but its slowly starting to feel like a home.

Moving

After searching since before Scarlett was born, we finally made the plunge and bought a house in Alameda. We are sad to leave San Francisco and our amazing neighborhood and friends, but we are also excited for this new huge chapter in our lives, and think we'll love Alameda.

Scarlett at 4 months

Just got back from our 4 month visit at Dr. Simons.
Weight - 16 Pounds 9oz (94%)
Height - 25 inches (80%)
Head Circumference - 92%

She's doing great. Hitting all her milestones. She's super strong like her brother was at that age, and generally a sweetheart who loves to stare at your face and flash her big toothless smile.

Max or Scarlett?

Max

The world will never know.

Baby Max in drag?

Seeing Scarlett dressed up like a little lady sometimes makes me feel like I'm looking at baby Max in drag.

Are you happy?

"Mommy... are you happy?"
"Daddy... are you happy?"

Max asks us the question at least 50 times a day, usually when we're mad at him for something.

Max at 2 1/2

Some stats from Max's doctors visit.
He's tall! 36 inches - 65%
He's thick! 32 pounds 10 oz - 80%

Unlike his younger days, he is a PLEASURE at the doctor. He actually gets excited to go. It's all about the promise of a lollypop and a balloon.

Scarlett at 3 months

Our little girl smiles a ton these days, and just like her brother, loves to stand.

Max loves his daddy

Max has been talking up a storm lately. He has so much he wants to say, he often has bouts of stuttering, which we were assured by our doctor it's a sign that Max is super smart. Recently he told me out of nowhere he told me following:
"Daddy is called Perry...Perry Wagner." (of course Scarlett's full name is "Baby Scarlett Wagner."
"Daddy is my best friend. Grandpa too."

That kid can sure be sweet.

"Mommy don't come in here!"

Max discovers chapstick and asks for some private time. First of many requests for mommy to leave I'm sure.

Roly Poly

Scarlett can now roll from back to tummy. Once she figured it our she quickly became an expert but seems to have forgotten how to flip from tummy to back.

Scarlett at 2 months

Our little girl is a big girl! Here are her stats from her two month appointment.
Height: 23 inches - 75%
Weight: 13 Pounds, 6 oz - 99.9%!
Head Circumference: 40.40cm - 90%!

The doctors visit went well but about two hours after her vaccines, she SCREAMED for over 2 hours straight. It was pretty heartbreaking and we called the doctor since I was sure there must be something awfully wrong since Max never reacted this way. I guess parents do quickly forget because my doctor was sure we called him with the exact same worries after Max got his 2 month shots. After some motrin, she seemed to recover after that first evening.

Overall, Scarlett has been a pretty easy baby. She has her cranky moments like all babies do, but she is pretty easy to soothe and has been sleeping way better than her brother did at the same age.

First Haircut

We have been talking about getting Max's hair cut for a long time. We figured he would need bribes and distraction in order for success, but I've seen lots of sad haircuts come out of the places designed for the little ones. I decided to take him to the shop where daddy gets his hair cut and told him we can just watch for awhile. At first he said "no haircut" but after 10 minutes that changed to, "I want haircut please."

We waited a long time for our turn which was the hardest part.

When it was finally time, Max sat up on a ton of phone books, put on his superhero cape, and got a lollypop.

He sat perfectly still the whole time and giggled when the clippers came out.

Sometimes, this kid surprises me.

Scarlett at one Month

Weight - 11 pounds 1oz (90%)
Height - 22 inches (80%)
Head Circumference 90%

Our first month with Scarlett has been challenging, but overall, she is doing pretty well. Like Max, she is a huge spitter upper, but also gaining weight like a champ. She likes to stay up late but has been a pretty impressive sleeper once she hits the sack.

Narwhal, meet Airplane

Max is having his toy narwhal and airplane talk to each other:

Narwhal: "Can I have airplane?"
Airplane: "It's closed"
Narwhal: "But I want airplane"
Airplane: "OK"

Welcome Scarlett!

Scarlett Valentine Wagner
Born on 4/16/11 at CPMC 5:28 PM
8 Pounds, 10oz - 20 1/2 inches

I suppose I should have mentioned the fact that I was expecting baby number two somewhere in the last 10 months of this blog. I must admit I feel a little guilt for blogging every detail of Max's time inside my tummy, and not even mentioning expecting our little girl, but when you are taking care of a toddler, it leaves little time for other things. My pregnancy was pretty easy, other than getting HUGE and chasing around a crazy toddler with a big belly (which by the way, Max has declared my big belly button his lovey). Unlike her brother, Scarlett decided she did not want to check out of hotel Heather early, and had to be induced 8 days past her due date. Labor and delivery was a breeze (after an early epidural), lasting a little under 6 hours. At 5:28pm on April 16th, our 8 pound, 10oz sticky baby emerged. Perry stayed at the hospital until 11PM that night, and then went home to take care of Max. This was my first time away overnight since he's been born, and I missed my boys so much that I considered checking out early. Perry did an amazing job being Mr. Mom while I was gone, and Scarlett gave Max some presents (James and Toby trains) to soften the blow. We've heard a lot of "put the baby down" from Max over the past two weeks, but for the most part Max seems to be adjusting pretty well for a two year old. The true test will be when Perry goes back to work on Monday.

2nd Year Doctor Visit

Today was Max's 2 year doctor visit, a place that invoked panic in all involved (including our wonderful Pediatrician) in the past. We talked all morning about what the doctor does and how he'll get a lollypop at the end of the day. He actually seemed super excited about it all but I expected it wouldn't last when the rush of memories returned from seeing the office. To my surprise, he played happily with all the toys in the waiting room and was amazing for the doctor, chatting (and singing) up a storm. The doctor was super impressed by him and said he's pretty much got the best vocabulary a 2 year old could hope for, even with my necessary translations.

Here are his other stats:
Height: 34 inches (50th %)
Weight: 29 1/2 pounds (70%)
I have no idea how this kid is so solid considering he eats like a picky mouse.

I couldn't have been happier at how smoothly this appointment went. Max couldn't have been happier with his lollypop.
